Disturbing mold releases spores
Dry brushing or sanding a moldy surface is the fastest way to put spores in the air. Damp it down and wear protection.
Use case
Mold work is not just dust. Cleaning products bring their own vapors, and scrubbing a damp surface throws both into the air at once.

The smell of a strong cleaner is a vapor, and a particulate mask does not stop it. For enclosed, poorly ventilated cleaning, use carbon cartridges.
Confined spaces trap dust, spores and vapor. Ventilate mechanically before you start, and never work alone in a space you cannot leave quickly.
| Job | Suggested product | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dusting, vacuuming, light tidying | VQ-DM100 Fold-Flat | Enough for routine dust |
| Scrubbing mold off a wall | VQ-DM400 Headband | Stays in place while you reach and scrub |
| Cleaning with bleach or a strong cleaner | VQ-RH500 + VQ-CA210 | Carbon handles the vapor, not just the mist |
| Repeat mold work each season | VQ-RH520 + FP120 pads and CA210 cartridges | Swap between dust-only and vapor jobs |

Replacement
For the smells that dust masks do not stop.
A spray bottle of water keeps spores out of the air. Dry scrubbing is the mistake that makes mold work worse.
Bag what you remove before carrying it through the house, so you are not redistributing spores on the way out.
Open a window and pull air through with a fan. A mask is a backstop for the residual, not a substitute for air exchange.
It filters particles at 95% or better, and spores are particles. It will not stop the vapor from cleaning products, and it will not help if the surface is dry-scrubbed into the air in the first place.
Activated carbon is intended for organic vapors and odors. Strong bleach exposure in a closed space is a job for proper ventilation and an appropriate assessment, not for a consumer cartridge.
If mold covers more than a small patch, keeps returning, or the space is damp because of a building fault, get it assessed professionally. Treating the symptom will not fix the cause.
