Use case

Protection for home DIY and renovation

Renovation mixes everything: plaster dust, insulation fibers, adhesive vapor, old paint. Keep one mask for dust and one facepiece for the smelly jobs, and choose the job-appropriate one each time.

What you are actually breathing

Plaster dust coats the whole house

Sanding filler and chasing walls is a fine-dust job that lasts for days. A mask that stays on for the whole session is the one that works.

Insulation fibers irritate

Cutting and installing insulation releases fibers that irritate your airways and skin. Cover up and wear a mask for the whole install, not just the cutting.

Adhesive and solvent vapor

Contact adhesive, sealants and solvents put solvent vapor in the room. Switch to a carbon cartridge for those jobs.

Do the job properly

  1. Keep dust out of the house

Hang a dust sheet at the doorway and change out of work clothes before you walk through. A mask protects you, not your sofa.

  2. Assume old paint is a lead risk

In pre-1980 housing, sanding old paint may involve lead. Do not dry-sand it; get it tested and follow local guidance before you disturb it.

  3. Two masks, one routine

Keep a dust mask and a carbon-equipped facepiece together. Deciding between them takes a second if both are already to hand.

Questions people ask

Can I use the same mask for dust and paint?

No. For paint, adhesive and solvent vapor you need a facepiece with activated carbon cartridges. A particulate mask will filter the spray droplets but not the vapor.

What about asbestos?

Do not work on suspect asbestos-containing materials yourself. That is a licensed specialist job, and no product on this site is intended for it.

How many masks will a renovation use?

Budget roughly one mask per heavy session and keep a box in the room you are working in. The longer the walk to fetch a fresh mask, the longer people wear a used one.
